COMING SOON...Neurofeedback

NOVO is proud to announce we are bringing Neurofeedback services to our practice soon.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, or neurotherapy, is biofeedback for the brain.  It has been used effectively to treat mood disorders, ADD/ADHD, brain injuries, sleep disorders, epilepsy and addictions. It has even been shown to have beneficial effects for those coping with autism and psychosis.  While it is not well known, it has been used for almost 40 years with none of the side effects common to drug therapies.

In addition to helping to correct dysfunctional brain patterns, it can be used to optimize brain functioning for individuals who want to “up their game.”  It does this by reducing inefficiencies and improving connectivity within the brain.

Neurofeedback provides clients with direct feedback about the state of particular brain wave activity in the form of audible tones or images on a computer screen to allow direct conscious manipulation of the target wave.  Like physical exercises to strengthen target muscles, these activities improve the functioning of the target pathways and create permanent changes to the brain.  It is a safe, natural, data guided treatment that corrects problems rather than covering them up.

Co-parenting and teamwork are synonymus?

Co-parenting can apply to couples that are currently married, seperated, divorced or even widowed and getting help from others.  We each have our own idea of parenting and how it should be done.  We act/react a certain way based on how we were raised by our parents or guardians.  Taking two individuals and assuming they are both going to parent EXACTLY the same way in every situation is absurd!  Figuring out how to get on the same "parenting page" is the hard part.  You will find out how to communicate effectively and get on the same "parenting page" at our upcoming Parent University workshop that is only a little over a week away!  Check it out.

Boundaries, and Negotiations, and Communication, Oh My!

The Wizard of Oz mantra "Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!",  is said to imply that the speaker is fearful of a rumored threat.  It is not outside the realm of possibility that when a parent hears/says "Boundaries, and Negotiations, and Communication, Oh my!", they are also feeling a bit fearful and unsure.  Many parents are hopeful, excited and a bit fearful as they head off to the hospital to give birth to their babies and head into the future of parenting.  Babies are birthed and the hospital sends said parents home with their beautiful babies with a "Good Luck".  It is not until much later that the words, boundary-setting, negotiations and open communication come into our parenting vocabularies.  Are we back to feeling as unsure, ill-equipped, and unprepared as we did when we were sent home from the hospital?  You bet we are!  Every parent feels this way in some way or another.  You may have a friend or family member that always looks like they have it together - they really "get" this parenting stuff.  That person most likely has had a much needed helping hand from someone else with experience or they may be feeling anything but confident on the inside but they are not going to let anyone know.  If you need a bit of a helping hand but don't know where the help is found, you have found it!  Sign up today for NOVO's Parent University. You will see that there are many parents out there in your shoes in one way or another.  You and your family will benefit from taking a bit of time out of your hectic schedule to 'go back to school' and learn how to manage some of the needs your child requires you to meet.  Call 630-297-3617 or email us at mail@novocounsel.com to register for your spot today!  Bring your spouse or a friend for support!

Those of us in the people helping mental health field were thrilled to read the following in a recent issue of Psychology Today. The magazine concluded that mental health care including professional psychotherapy and prescription medications is increasingly widespread and widely accepted!

It went on to say that more than1 in 4 adults, or more accurately 27%, of the United States adult population has received mental health services over the last two years. Unfortunately, children were not included in this survey but we might speculate that if adults (parents) are finding greater value in mental health care, children are also benefiting from the services as well.

The people who received treatment, according to Psychology Today, were overwhelmingly satisfied with the results! Of those adults surveyed 85% were satisfied with their treatment and more than 50% were very to extremely satisfied. Those who are most satisfied with treatment results received long-term therapy (one year or longer) as opposed to brief treatment experiences.

Though the numbers receiving treatment in the form of medication still exceed the number receiving psychotherapy, over 53% of those with a treatment history have participated in psychotherapy. Further most psychiatrists who provide medication have historically encouraged patients to seek psychotherapy services.

Psychotherapy has a long history of helping people cope better with daily life experiences, successfully work through crises and traumas, and renew joy in living that NOVO feels so strongly about that it’s actually part of our name.

I believe that when we heal the mental hurts people are living with, we enable them to live more fully. People who participate in long-term psychotherapy have been known to experience less physical illness, miss less days of work, experience greater self fulfillment and success in their relationship, and find more healthy solutions to their issues and problems to name just a few positive outcomes.
